Wildflower embroidered fabric heart - Hapa Zome DIY

Did I ever make a blog post about this embroidered heart I made years ago? I know I shared a glimpse once with a note telling you to go find the how-to-Hapa-Zome DIY on another blog of mine. But that blog is inactive, the link is no longer working. Time to share the Hapa Zome DIY and the heart itself here.

In my explorations in textile art I came across natural dyeing. One of the easiest ways to dye your fabrics in a natural way is to hammer the colours in the cloth. Literally.

DIY petite fabric heart charm

When my blog was only a few days old I made a tutorial for a sweet fabric heart charm. I was all into pink at that time!

Now, three years later, I revisited this post after I noticed it got pinned to pinterest. I thought it was charming, but the photo editing needed a bit of an update. So I dug up the old original photos, edited them and updated the original post.

Then I got enthusiastic about this sweet charm.

With my current style and preferences in mind I created a new fabric heart charm and made a tutorial for you. And I made another charm :)

Materials needed

Fabric (leftovers are perfect for this!)

A small piece of lace or other applique / embellishment / piece of fabric

Needle and thread

Scissors

Small heart shape template

(there are plenty on pinterest but I just eyeballed mine by folding a piece of paper, cut a half heart, unfold, et voila)

Pins

Cotton stick

Cotton wool or other filling for your heart

Thin ribbon (optional)

Beads

DIY wire and lace heart

A few days ago I saw a beautiful tutorial of a wire and lace heart by Miri of Miris Rosenhuegel (scroll down on her blog page for the heart tutorial).

I loved the wire and lace hearts she created but the tutorial is in German (which doesn't have to be a problem though) and I wanted an easier way to create a similar effect plus I wanted to add lace in the middle too. So I decided to make my own DIY.

So here it is, my wire and lace heart DIY.

It's party time!!

I was so happy with the sweet and enthusiastic replies that I received. How wonderful to hear that my blog buddies also love the idea!

So, here is to you:

Simply Neutrals Tuesday #1!

A party needs some decoration, don't you think? So for this party I felt like making a little fabric autumn leaves garland.

And made a little DIY for anyone interested. It's very easy to make.

Some tips though:

1) You can find many leaf templates on pinterest.

2) Use sturdy fabric that doesn't fray too much (for this one I used an old table cloth).

3) Next time I will probably try leaving less space between the leaves and/or stitch them by hand using thicker thread.

Because although I like it as it is now, the garland is quite delicate the way I made it and the thread was pulling - well, you'll notice when you try this method - I just pulled back :)
